Sail ahead with a startup internship

Where should you anchor your career boat?

You’ve finished university, passed with flying colours and celebrated enough to last the year – now what? Do you go travelling, do you go move back home or do you begin an startup internship? Nowadays, a degree isn’t always enough. The latter will give you invaluable experience and push your CV that bit closer to the top of the pile.

Finding an internship at a big corporate company is extremely competitive. Why not swim in the benefits of interning at a fresh and exciting startup company.

Five reasons why you should steer your boat into startup waters

1. Be more than a hot drink maker

Forget having to make copious amounts of tea and coffee. In a startup internship, you will be given much more responsibility than knowing how many sugars your boss takes. Your skills will be utilised, stretched and developed. You might find yourself thrown into the deep end, but with a little hard work, impending tasks will soon become smooth sailing.

2. Get to know your boss

An advantage of a startup internship is that you get to work closely with key people in your industry. Get hands on experience and learn from those that are further along down their career. Working alongside your boss will give you the responsibility and recognition you need to progress.

3. Work in an innovative environment

Surround yourself with innovative and creative entrepreneurs. Find yourself being inspired by like minded, and quite often similar aged people. That way, you can build a strong rapport and feed off each other’s creativity. And generally startup working environments are pretty relaxed. Giving your input into decision making doesn’t have to be daunting!

4. Flourish with the company

A startup is called a startup for a very good reason. The company is in its inception stage so colleagues are often open to suggestions. Be a part of the moulding process! You will find yourself more involved in the team and given the space to grow along with the company.

5. Success at its best

There’s no finer feeling than seeing your finished piece of work. Collaborating with a small team means that you put in a larger contribution. Therefore, a greater sense of pride can be felt when the product is complete. A startup internship is not the easy route but is highly beneficial. Your skill set will be in ship shape by the time you onboard towards your future career dock.
