Ocado Group is a technology-led, global, software and robotics platform business, with a strong retail heritage. We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Monetisation cluster of teams in our Ecommerce, Shop department. You will be responsible for a number of teams and the products or services they provide. You will take care of these teams, making sure they are properly resourced, skilled and have suitable processes so that they can deliver products / services in a timely manner with the expected speed and expected quality.

You will directly manage Engineering Team Leaders and will report to a Head of Engineering (HoE) within a stream, to align efforts to the best interest of Ocado and its customers. You will partner with a Group Product Manager, sharing accountability for achieving commitments to the delivery plan and for focusing teams’ effort on the missions that are important for Ocado Technology.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for all aspects of the products and/or services your teams are delivering, including appropriate timeliness and quality.

Leadership:

  • Accountable for teams having the right number of people (recruitment), with the right skills (training) and resources (workspace requirements, laptops, tooling).
  • Make sure that the teams have effective and sustainable processes in place, including ways to ensure innovation, experimentation and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with Product on prioritisation, planning, forecasting, tracking and progress reporting.
  • Act as an exemplar in building good relationships and trust between teams and stakeholders, embedding a ‘one Ocado’ approach.
  • Set clear goals and expectations for Team Leaders, providing timely feedback to support their development and improving their performance.
  • Partner with Product, leading people in your area to build and maintain high-performing teams and a healthy environment, aligned with Ocado Values and Ocado Technology Principles.
  • Act as a point of escalation for mediating of conflict, building trust and bringing parties to effective decisions.
  • Establish a respectful and trusted working relationship with Product counterpart to enable effective decision making and managing escalations.
  • Represent the area in forums (operational meetings, post mortems, etc.) with the support of Team Leaders or Team Members when needed.
  • Part of the leadership team of your stream, managing upwards, participating in cross-area and cross-departmental initiatives, whilst supporting centre initiatives as well.

 

Design for Future:

  • Make sure that technical discovery takes place, involving the right people at the right time.
  • Make sure that the right processes are in place so that Ocado Technology engineering principles, technical and departmental standards are being followed, and that standard tooling is used where appropriate (e.g. libraries, languages, integrations, provided services, existing systems, …).
  • Participate in creating and communicating the department strategy and the long term vision to your teams.
  • Make sure that teams have appropriate ways of working established, which are agreed and explicit, along with the suitable processes aligned with Lean, Agile and Systems Engineering principles.

Deliver for Today:

  • Focus on delivering value on time.
  • Identify risks (technical and organisational) and put in place mitigation plans, escalating when necessary.
  • Make sure that technical decisions are made in a timely manner and considering constraints, standards and recommendations, particularly inter-team decisions.
  • Accountable for your area’s levels of testing and manual toil.
  • Understand the relationships and dependencies of teams with key stakeholders, Product, other Engineering Managers and the HoE, and set appropriate cadences to keep them informed on delivery, performance and capacity.

Execute with Quality:

  • Accountable for a strong focus on the customer, and the impact of your area’s work on them.
  • Accountable for security in your area.
  • Establish the right cadences to track the effectiveness of the product, service and processes and makes sure that the products have appropriate observability.
  • Make sure that sustainable and effective processes are in place to support your area’s products and services.

Key Attributes

  • You lead and role model the Ocado values and Ocado Technology Principles daily.
  • You are highly organised and able to plan, manage, track and deliver effectively.
  • You lead and manage others effectively, coaching and giving feedback to support development.
  • You have sufficient knowledge of the technology used in the area and are capable of modelling and communicating the design: data, interactions, APIs, etc.
  • You are assertive but diplomatic and have a bias for action, collaboration and optimism.
  • You understand Lean and Agile principles and practices and knows when and how to use them
  • You cultivate a strong sense of ownership.
  • You know how to gather metrics to make better-informed decisions.
  • You are a respected manager that people want to follow.

Key Experience:

  • Practical / relevant experience as an individual contributor in the primary engineering specialities used in Ocado (Software, Data, Electronics, Test, Infrastructure etc).
  • Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD).
  • Mentoring or managing others effectively and supporting their personal development.
  • Ability to manage and direct your own and others work to achieve objectives.
