What You Will Do:
As a mixed methods user researcher in DIY Division, you’ll report into a Principal UX Researcher embedded within the same area, and you will operate within the following framework:
[1] Research Specialist: leading your own research
You'll be responsible for working closely with product teams and the Principal User Researcher to plan and run research projects end-to-end, supporting a human-centered design process to create high-quality user experiences.
This includes defining clear problem statements, framing project goals and ingoing research assumptions and questions, scoping and selecting the appropriate methods and tools, supporting in recruitment, running/facilitating research activities, analyzing and synthesizing data, and sharing and socializing findings.
[2] Coach / Trainer: supporting research being done by others
You'll also be supporting product teams and product team members (primarily in Product Management and Design) who are conducting their own research via:
>1 to 1 supports: You’ll be assisting partners who are evaluating usability risks by conducting research at the micro level (where we believe lots of hidden value lies!). These are high-leverage interactions where you may be doing anything from consulting on participant screener best practices to drafting and analyzing usability tests in tandem with members of the product team.
>1 to many supports: You’ll be developing and delivering trainings, building and improving templates (at all stages of the research process), enabling continuous discovery, and working closely with other User Researchers and the Research Operations team to develop 1:many resources for scaling high value, high-quality user research.
[3] Advisor: leveraging insights and a growing knowledge base to advise decision-making
Finally, you’ll be growing and leveraging multidisciplinary insights about users in service of prioritization and planning with your product teams and the Principal User Researcher. This includes organizational insights coming from primary research, site surveys, product analytics, and service interactions, but also incorporates knowledge about humans stemming from the broader fields of user research and product design and adjacent fields like behavioral science.
What You Bring
As a Research Specialist:
- A keen understanding of when to leverage generative vs. evaluative research.
- The capability to apply mixed methods (qual and quant) to develop a better understanding of customers, provide insight into business/user value, and identify potential customer and business risks.
- Strong skills in data analysis and quantitative research methods, enabling the extraction of valuable insights from large behavioral datasets (e.g. clickstream data, service contact data, etc).
- Expertise in communicating compellingly research findings, with an emphasis on storytelling through data and simplified frameworks for implementation.
As a Coach / Trainer:
- A strong willingness to mentor and guide Designers, Product Managers, and Engineers who conduct their own customer research efforts, providing leadership, mentorship, and oversight to ensure high-quality outcomes.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills.
- Strong intuition for when user research is / is not necessary.
- The ability to bring structure and shared understanding to discovery efforts by asking great questions and emphasizing adherence to research best practices.
- The proficiency to “productize” user research through the creation of training, templates, and other 1:many resources that grow Vista’s organizational capacity to do high-value, high-quality research.
- A passion for research democratization and enablement.
- A basic understanding of continuous discovery practices.
As an Advisor:
- An eagerness to accumulate deep, verticalized product knowledge balanced with accountability to the horizontal nature of the customer’s experience.
- An ability to recognize and synthesize patterns across primary research and other data sources to inform planning and prioritization within product teams and in partnership with the Senior User Researcher.
- A willingness to partner with other insights teams to enrich and broadly share our organizational understanding.
- Be energized by acting as the ‘glue’ across teams to ensure discovery efforts are additive and integrated (as opposed to redundant or disconnected).

- 2+ years experience in applied product research.
Bachelors or advanced degree in human behavior-related fields including but not limited to Computer Science, HCI, Experimental Psychology, Sociology, and Behavioral Science (while a bachelor's degree is a requirement, we are less restrictive on the area of focus as long as you have the requisite applied product research experience.
All applicants must submit a portfolio demonstrating experience as a Research Specialist: running end-to-end research, including scoping, research plan development, fielding, analysis, and implementation. We encourage you to incorporate examples mapping to the above “What You Bring” section.
Nice to Have:
- B2C e-commerce experience.
- Experience working with globally distributed teams and/or in highly matrixed organizations.
- Experience doing research across responsive web and native mobile platforms, as well as within large-scale digital ecosystems.
