The DevOps Manager will lead and coordinate the work of a team of DevOps Engineers. He is responsible, along with his team, for effective provisioning, deployment, configuration, monitoring and maintenance of cloud systems, software and related infrastructure. This individual participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. This individual ensures that cloud systems, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational values, enabling staff, volunteers, and Partners.

 

This individual will assist project teams with technical issues in the Initiation and Planning phases of our standard Project Management Methodology. These activities include the definition of needs, benefits, and technical strategy; research & development within the project life-cycle; technical analysis and design; and support of operations staff in executing, testing and rolling-out the solutions. Participation on projects is focused on smoothing the transition of projects from development environments to production environments by performing operations activities within the project life-cycle.

 

Duties for this role

 

Engineering and Provisioning

  • Engineering of solutions for various project and operational needs within the infrastructure domain

  • Provisioning, deployment and configuration of cloud systems and software in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.

  • Provisioning, deployment and configuration of systems such as the Frontiers Platform cloud solution and its dependencies.

  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures.

  • Contribute to and maintain system standards.

  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.

 

Operations and Support

  • Perform system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all services and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.

  • Perform security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.

  • Perform file archival and purge as necessary.

  • Create, change, and delete user accounts per request.

  • Provide other support per request from various teams. Investigate and troubleshoot issues.

  • Repair and recover from cloud services or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted teams.

 

Maintenance

  • Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis and upgrade administrative tools and utilities.

  • Upgrade and configure system software that supports the Frontiers Platform applications.

  • Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures.

  • Perform performance reporting to support capacity planning.

  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, service upgrades and resource optimization as required.

 

Leadership

  • Lead the team of DevOps Engineers to operational excellence.

  • Coordinate the work/tasks within the team.

  • Responsible for the completion of tasks and goals, prioritising and negotiating scope whenever necessary.

  • Ensure technological standards are met by the team in regard to security, scalability, reliability, performance and such.

  • Mentor junior level DevOps Engineers to adhere to company standards and best industry DevOps practices.

  • Transfer knowledge to raise the general competence level of DevOps Engineers to ensure business continuity for service management.

  • Ensure all operational documentation is established and maintained by team members.

 

Required experience / background / skills:

 

General Skills

  • Previous team lead experience is preferred but not essential

  • Motivational skills, ability to communicate and build relationships on all levels

  • Experience with Cloud environments, preferably Azure

  • Experience with scripting languages, preferably Powershell

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code

  • Experience with Continuous Delivery and Continuous Deployment

  • Knowledge of systems networking

  • Knowledge of docker containers and/or Kubernetes

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken)
