London Startup Life

Multicultural, educated, trendy and traditional at the same time… the old city of London is the most important international startup hub in Europe. Startups such as Yplan, Editd, Affectv, TransferWise, Hailo, Yoyo or Milkster, plus many American and European high tech companies have offices in the English capital. Actually, the internet industry is expected to contribute as much as 12 percent to British GDP by 2016.

Back in 2010, Prime Minister David Cameron launched Tech City UK, a publicly-funded organization which aims to accelerate the growth of digital businesses. With Headquarters in East London, Tech City UK provides entrepreneurs and small businesses with advice, professional training, tax aid and access to funds. Since April 2014, they are also an official advisor to the Home Office on applications for visas for investors and highly skilled tech workers from overseas.

Further on, Mayor Boris Johnson launched the Smart London Plan, which looks at the role digital technology can play in helping to address the challenges the city will face during the 2011-2021 decade when London’s population is expected to grow by a million people. Among many other goals, London Plan aims to support the creation of 200,000 technology positions by 2020.

As it is well known, England is a country with a reputed academic tradition –four of the world’s top 10 universities are based in the UK. Together with the solid economic grounds of the country, the multicultural and creative ambience and the government support to new technologies can only be good to the development of the buzzing startup scene of the city.

London is not only a great place for startup lovers, but also a vibrant city and an exciting place to live in. If you like art and design, you may want to visit the Tate Modern, the Victoria and Albert Museum or the Design Museum. If you prefer to enjoy London’s club scene, you may want to visit superclubs like Ministry of Sound, Fabric or Heaven – or attend one of the many DJ bars.

Although it may sound surprising, London is great to relax by taking a walk while admiring fascinating architectural monuments such as Saint Paul’s Cathedral, Buckingham Palace or the Tower of London.

Take a stroll through Hyde Park, make time for the afternoon tea at a terrace and have some Chinese food at the newest pop-up. Don’t miss the shopping scene on Covent Garden or Camden Town street market and plan to end the day with a pint of beer at one of the many pubs of the cities.

There’s no question about it, London is a huge and amazing city that can’t be defined in a few of paragraphs. It’s a truly exciting place to explore and live in. If you’re looking for an adventure, don’t miss the great London-based high tech startups as they may be in need of talented and creative professionals like yourself.
