Networking event: Hop, skip and jump into the unknown

March 25, 2013 Chloe Young

There’s an upcoming networking event and you’re in two minds about going. One half of your mind automatically kicks into excuse auto pilot mode. Whereas the other half is urging you to manually accelerate full speed ahead.

Leave any doubts in the pit stop. Read on and you will start to see the silver lining around that ominous networking cloud.

Switch off auto pilot and steer your career along the road of success

7 reasons to get your networking ladder out

1. Arrive hungry, leave full with confidence

It can be daunting attending a networking event, so give yourself a pat on the back for even getting through the door. Share your fantastic skills and admirable qualities with like minded people. Boost your self-esteem and walk out with your head held high. As the song goes, things can only get better.

2.  Build upon that glorious personal profile of yours

It’s all very well building up your online presence. But there’s nothing more effective than meeting in person. A networking event is the perfect pedestal to shine. That way, you can build up a rapport and develop trust. All whilst showing how wonderful you are in an informal environment.

3. Connect and connect some more

Seeing colleagues out of the office will strengthen your relationship. And whilst you’re setting existing friendships in stone, make some new friends too. It’s all about right place, right time. A networking event is a big step on the startup ladder.

4. Be in the know

Get to know the ins and outs of your industry. See it as homework but without actually doing much work at all. Keeping up to date will give you a competitive edge. A networking event is your learning platform. What you take away from it, can be invaluable in the office.

5. The best jobs are not advertised anywhere

A networking event is the ideal hunting ground for job seekers. No matter how long you trawl the internet for that perfect job or send off loads of CVs, competition is fierce. Go that extra mile. Make a good impression and share your interests with others in your field. And if all goes well, they’ll know of or will recommend you when a fitting job comes up.

6. Smell the potential

A networking event is the gateway to the land of opportunity. Investing some time into networking will do wonders for your business. A pool of potential clients, partners and investors inviting you to take a dip into. Expanding your contacts will expand your business – simple!

7. Work and fun? Surely not

Last but by no means least. Have fun! A networking event will pave the way to exciting opportunities. And all you have to do is be yourself. Bond with big time bosses on a more informal level. Just remember not to take advantage of those free drinks too much. Be remembered for the right reasons.

Why not begin reaping the benefits of networking with our upcoming JobFluent event.
